Sacred Spaces, The Houses of Worship Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a film documenting Frank Lloyd Wright’s ten diverse houses of worship, will be shown at the Illinois State Museum on Sunday October 7, 1:30-2:45 PM and again at 3:15-4:30 PM. An introduction will be given by the film’s director, Michael Miner.
As a part of his philosophy of Organic Architecture, Wright believed that a building should be in harmony with its natural surroundings and in these examples each should embody the distinctive profile of its congregation. In 1958 Wright wrote, “that all forms of religion have a basic desire to function in harmony with their beliefs and I try to help them. For architecture is not just building it’s the living spirit that builds.” Unity Temple, Oak Park, IL, was his first Sacred Space of which Wright himself would say, “Unity Temple is where you will find the first real expression of the idea that the space within the building is the reality of that building.”
By experiencing these buildings one can appreciate Wright’s contribution to American art, architecture and ideas. The film features all classical music scores of Frank Lloyd Wrights' personal favorites.
The film is sponsored by AIA Illinois Springfield Section and the Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield and will be shown free of charge in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium of the Illinois State Museum, 502 South Spring Street in Springfield, IL 62706.
